Excellent birding opportunities are available at Cedar Cabins Bird Sanctuary for the avid birder and the casual birder. Of the 574 recorded in Belize, almost 200 species of resident and migratory birds have been recorded on the property. Cedar Cabins is engaged in a permanent bird monitoring program and keeps accurate records of the birding population on site, including nesting patterns, roosting and seasonal distributions.
On arrival you may be welcomed by the strikingly red male Vermilion Flycatcher or the loud, raucous kis-ka-dee call of the Great Kiskadee. The American Kestrel, a small migratory falcon perches conspicuously on trees and swoops down to catch insects or small reptiles. On entering the trail, listen for the haunting and unmistakable 3-note call, oh-rik-eee, of the inconspicuous Thrush-like Schiffornis. Look carefully for the quiet and calm White-whiskered Puffbird or the brightly cinnamon colored, active and explosively vocal Squirrel Cuckoo. Before leaving the trail, listen for the loud and distinctive double rap of the Pale-billed Woodpecker, the Chestnut-Colored Woodpecker or the Lineated Woodpecker. Many other species of interest have been observed here either as residents, roosting, nesting or feeding. Some of these include the Black-Headed Trogon, Violaceous Trogon, the Indigo Bunting, the Rose Breasted Grosbeak, the Yellow-throated Euphonia, the White Crowned Parrot, the White Fronted Parrot, the Laughing Falcon, the Crane Hawk, the Collared Aracari, the King Vulture, 15 species of warblers, 4 species of orioles, 9 species of tanagers, 20 species of flycatchers, and numerous other feathered treats!
